In the build up to the Ashes 2017-18 that got underway, England captain Joe Root has played down the talk of reopening the 'scars' of the 2013-14 series when England were thrashed 5-0. He instead reminded critics that England has won four of the last five Ashes series, and currently holds the urn.

"You hear a lot about these scars but that was a series which happened four years ago and we've won four of the last five Ashes. We've got a lot of guys who have very fond memories of 2015. I don't know whether they are just trying to brush that under the carpet but for me it's completely irrelevant what happened four years ago,” Root said.

"It is a bit bizarre. I think you can sort of see through it a little as well. The more guys talk, the more they put pressure on themselves,” he added.

Australia's record at the Gabba shows they haven't lost there since 1988. “It would certainly put them under a lot of pressure because they haven't lost here for such a long period of time," said Root. "I suppose that is our main goal, we are going to go out there to try and upset that. We fully believe we are more than capable of doing that,” said former captain Alastair Cook.
